In the tradition of the “covered wagons,” EMD offered aB unit model for it’s GP7 and GP9. B units gave all the samepower and performance as a standard GP-9 but savedthe costs of cabs and controls. Most roads preferred theflexibility to use their Geeps in single as well as multipleunit service, and only the Pennsylvania and Union Pacificordered GP9Bs. The Pennsy’s fleet survived throughPenn Central and into Conrail before retirement. UnclePete’s made it to the early 1970s.A perfect pairing with the GP9s, theseB units can be used with other power as well.
