Easily one of the most iconic steam locomotives of alltime, Henry Dreyfuss’ styling for the 1938 20th CenturyLimited has endured for nearly a century as a pinnacleof industrial design. Only ten J3 Hudsons received thistreatment and the shrouds lasted barely a decade, buttheir impact on popular culture remains.The Hudson is finally back in the Lionel catalog, with allnew tooling which allows accurate looks for both asdesignedand modified versions. 5449 and 5452 willfeature the full streamlining, with either Boxpok or Scullindisk drive wheels as appropriate. It didn’t take longfor some of the streamlining to be cut back, however.5445 shows a little trimming in its 1939 “Mercury” dress.We’re offering 5445 again and 5447 with the impressivePT tenders as well. The enormous tanks and furtherreduction of the cowling did more for operations thanappearance, but they are still impressive machines.Last but not least, we have one “fantasy” scheme whichreverses the colors to better match the later look of theNYC’s fleet.
